Quantum Computing in Drug Discovery: A Review of Foundations and Emerging Applications

Abstract: Research Problem: The traditional methods of drug discovery are time-consuming, costly, and at times ineffective. There is a need for more novel approaches that can enhance the processes of discovering new drugs and developing them into usable products. Objective of the Paper: This paper aims to conduct a review of the literature and find how the application of quantum computing can change the way drugs are discovered and processed in practice. Process of Review: The review process involved a comprehensive examination of the available literature and recent advances in the application of quantum computing to drug discovery. The review encompassed major studies, theories, and case studies related to the subject matter, aiming to identify the current state and potential future directions of the domain. Insights of the Review: 1. Primary Building Blocks: With quantum computing, superposition, entanglement, and other principles can be utilised to enable complex computations to be performed at higher speeds using less time than traditional computers. 2. Quantum modelling: Quantum computers are expected to accurately model the interactions of various molecules, which could result in the identification of viable drug candidates. 3. Drug Discovery Processes: Quantum algorithms are capable of faster processing than traditional methods when it comes to solving optimisation problems, such as protein structure prediction and molecular docking, in drug design. 4. Limitations and Challenges: As great as the promise of quantum computing is, it has its limitations and challenges, including hardware limitations, error rates, and the need for specialised algorithms. 5. Future Developments: The ongoing development of quantum hardware and algorithms is expected to enhance the practical applications of quantum computing in drug discovery, enabling the quicker and more cost-effective creation of new drugs.

Application of HR CS GF-MAS for Determining the Intracellular Concentration of Fluorinated Drugs and Drug Candidates in Cancer Cells, Using Calcium Monofluoride (CaF) as the Target Molecule

Abstract: Fluorinated drugs and drug candidates are showing signs of becoming a cornerstone in the fight against cancer, a threat to the well-being of humanity. An HR CS GF-MAS method has been developed for quantifying their intracellular concentration in cancer cells, a prerequisite for efficacy and effectiveness. The study determined the intracellular concentration of the fluorinated drug 5 Fluoro uracil (5FU) and a drug candidate, [chlorido (Fe (III)4Fluoro Salophen)], an iron complex. The method presented here is very sensitive with a lower limit of quantitation of 3µg/L equivalent to 3ng/ml, accurate, with an accuracy range of 99.8-102.9%; it is fast, less than two minutes per sample, linear in the range of 12.5-600µg/l (R2=1), precision was demonstrated by the method, the highest coefficient of variance for inter and intra-day precision test was 5.1. A novel sample preparation approach using citric acid and tetramethyl ammonium hydroxide effectively extracted fluorides with high accuracy and precision. These reagents equally stabilized fluorides and prevented their loss in the form of hydrogen fluoride. These attributes enable the method to generate accurate and reliable data that informs the drug development process. The tested ability of the validated HR CS GF-MAS method to determine the intracellular concentration of both organofluorinated drugs and fluorinated metal complexes makes it a reliable tool for developing and testing fluorinated medications in general. Drug researchers may also use this method to explore the mechanism of fluorinated drug uptake in cells and analyse fluorinated drugs in other matrices.

Abstract: The plant Ventilago maderaspatana belongs to the genus Ventilago, within the family Rhamnaceae. It’s commonly known as the “Red Creeper” and in Tamil as “Surulbattaikkoti”. It is a medium-sized plant. Panicles axillary and terminal, to 15 cm long, grey pubescent; pedicels to 3 mm, pubescent; calyx tube obconic, 1 mm, lobes to 2 mm, triangular; petals 1 mm, obovate; stamens 5, opposite to the petals, filaments 1 mm, disc flattened, 5-angled; ovary half inferior, pubescent, style 0.5 mm, stigma shortly bifid. Different qualitative tests for alkaloids, catechin, coumarin, glucoside, flavonoids, saponins, fixed oils, terpenoids, phenols, steroids, anthroquinones, quinines, xanthoprotein and sugar. It exhibits effective pharmacological activity, including antimicrobial, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, hepatoprotective, cardioprotective, antihyperlipidemic, antiulcer, antioxidant, and anticancer properties. It contains crucial medical constituent compounds, such as Anthraquinone derivatives Ventinone A and B, chrysophyll, emodine, and islandicin—naphthalene derivatives of naphthalene and maderona. Fruits contain lupeol and sitosterol. Leaf and stem contain their glycosides. Stem bark contains friedelin. The results from this review are quite promising for the use of Ventilago madraspatana, a multipurpose medicinal agent, which has been successfully utilised in Siddha medicine in various countries. More clinical trials should be conducted to support its therapeutic use.

Survey of Knowledge of Pharmacy Students and Pharmacists Regarding Artificial Intelligence in Lattakia

Abstract: Artificial Intelligence is crucial in various sectors, including pharmacy. A survey was conducted to assess the level of knowledge about artificial intelligence (AI) among pharmacy students and pharmacists in Lattakia. A total of 117 participants took part in the survey, with most participants aged between 18 and 25 years (88.9%). This finding underscores the importance of the younger generation understanding AI, considering its role as a key advancement in future industries. Of the participants, 79.5% were female, and 71.8% were students at a pharmacy college. Notably, 80% of users actively engage with platforms such as Facebook, YouTube, WhatsApp, Instagram, Telegram, and Google. Surprisingly, 88% reported a lack of familiarity with AI. Survey responses highlighted the perceived benefits of AI, with 63% citing profit enhancement, 70% pointing to the availability of drug-related data and side effects, and 88% emphasising the reduction of prescription errors. Conversely, 82% acknowledged a primary drawback of AI as the potential decrease in job opportunities. 70% believe that a smart pharmacy would monitor medication expiration dates, remove expired drugs, and automate ordering from suppliers based on needs. Furthermore, approximately two-thirds envisioned an innovative laboratory capable of calibrating tools, documenting test outcomes, analyzing data, and automatically receiving, labeling, and storing samples. 63% acknowledged the need for more education on AI, while 53% recognized the importance of integrating AI into the pharmacy curriculum. The findings revealed that pharmacy students and pharmacists possess limited awareness regarding AI in general and its specific applications in pharmacy.

Role of HILIC Stationary Phases in Pharmaceutical Peptide Analysis

Abstract: Hydrophilic interaction chromatography (HILIC) is characterized by a polar stationary phase and an organic (apolar) mobile phase containing a small proportion of water. The HILIC retention mechanism is based on solute partitioning between the mobile phase (rich in organic solvents) and the aqueous phase layer. This separation method had already been used in 1975 for the analysis of oligosaccharides. The term HILIC was proposed by Alpert in 1990 during a study on the separation of amino acids and peptides. Stationary phases specifically developed for HILIC approaches can be particulate (pure silica or polar groups grafted onto silica-based or polymeric supports) or monolithic. This chromatographic mode has proven useful, particularly for hydrophilic peptides exhibiting low retention on RP columns. This review aimed to present the role of HILIC particulate and monolithic phases in the analysis of pharmaceutical peptides. Detailed descriptions of different HILIC phases were presented. Examples of peptide separation by HILIC mode were shown.
