Abstract: Nutraceuticals have garnered significant interest due to their perceived safety and potential nutritional and medicinal benefits. Consumers place more importance on nutrition than on exercise or heredity when it comes to maintaining good health, according to research conducted in the UK, Germany, and France, which led to the development of the field of nutraceuticals. Nutraceuticals have gained popularity in recent years as an alternative to traditional medicine due to their numerous health benefits. Nutraceuticals might reduce or eliminate the need for conventional drugs, reducing the risk of adverse effects. Nutraceuticals often possess unique chemical properties that are distinct from those of medications. Obesity, osteoporosis, diabetes, cancer, allergies, and dental problems are among the current diseases that the globe is fighting. Diet and exercise have a key role in both preventing and treating obesity, a condition that is on the rise globally. Nutraceuticals are primarily composed of dietary supplements, herbal remedies, and nutrients that support health, prevent disease, and improve quality of life. It is well recognised that nutritional products can be used to both prevent and treat disease. Most pharmacological compounds used in modern formulations were previously employed in their most basic form.

Antiurolithiatic Activity of Desmodium Gangeticum L. and Heteropogon Contortus L

Abstract: Over the past decade, there has been an increasing interest in investigating plant-based diuretic drugs. As the available medicinal efficacy is low and patients have to undergo painful surgeries in urolithiasis cases, they seek alternative medicine. This growing popularity necessitates a thorough investigation of plant extracts that can be used as antiurolithiatic agents. The main objective is to determine and confirm that the extracts of the selected weeds can be used as diuretic agents to treat urolithiasis conditions. The present study focuses on the extraction of weeds Desmodium gangeticum L. and Heteropogon contortus L. using a solvent and evaluates their in vivo antiurolithiatic potency. The plants Desmodium gangeticum L. and Heteropogon contortus L. were collected from around the Telangana region. Dr. K. Madhava Chetty, Department of Botany, Sri Venkateshwara University, Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh, India, authenticated the collected plants. Roots of Desmodium gangeticum L., and Heteropogon contortus L., were thoroughly washed under tap water, dried under shade, and powdered by using a mechanical grinder. The preparation of extracts was performed using Soxhlet extraction with methanol. The extracts were examined for their colour and consistency, and their percentage yield was calculated based on the quantity used for extraction. The preliminary phytochemical investigations were carried out using Desmodium gangeticum L. and Heteropogon contortus L. root extracts to determine the presence of carbohydrates, terpenes, tannins, flavonoids, steroids, phenols, and alkaloids. An acute oral toxicity study was conducted using male Wistar rats by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Guideline 425. No toxicity was found up to a dose of 2000 mg/kg body weight. The higher dose of both plant root extracts showed good antiurolithiatic activity. Their potent in vitro and in vivo antiurolithiatic activity was dosedependent and comparable to that of the standard drugs Cystone and Neeri. Based on the pattern of excretion of water and electrolytes, it appears that active principles are present in these extracts having a frusemide-like activity. In another set of experiments, the state of hyperoxaluria induced by oral administration of 0.75% ethylene glycol in rats was significantly normalised by the oral administration of methanolic root extracts of Desmodium gangeticum L. and Heteropogon contortus L. The preliminary phytochemical investigation of methanolic root extracts of Desmodium gangeticum L., and Heteropogon contortus L., showed the presence of alkaloids, triterpenes, saponins, steroids, and flavonoids. Desmodium gangeticum L., and steroids, phenols, flavonoids, and triterpenes in methanolic root extracts of Heteropogon contortus L. Phenolics, flavonoids, alkaloids, and tannins act individually or in synergy via multiple mechanisms to produce the observed effect. However, the specific compound is not yet determined. The findings from the present study support the traditional use of Desmodium gangeticum L. and Heteropogon contortus L. (roots) for their antiurolithiatic activity.

Abstract: Altered lifestyle and habits have created problems in oral hygiene and have similarly gained wide attention towards mouthwash. Overcoming the side effects of chemical-based mouthwashes, herbal mouthwashes are potentially popular for maintaining oral health. This article focuses on utilising the significant antiplaque, antibacterial, and antimicrobial properties of a few herbs in the formulation development of a polyherbal mouthwash. The aqueous extracts, mixed in an appropriate proportion, maintain an alcohol-free formulation. The various test results of physicochemical and microbial evaluation confirm the desired activity of the prepared formulation, making it effective in oral hygiene.

Assessment of Awareness Regarding Paracetamol-Containing Medicine Toxicity Among Syrians

Abstract: This study aimed to assess Syrians’ awareness of paracetamol toxicity. An online survey was shared on social media, and in-person interviews were conducted in June 2025. A total of 114 valid responses were collected. The questionnaire had three sections: demographic information, participants’ knowledge of the paracetamol treatment plan, and their perceptions of its risks and toxicity. The results showed that most participants (70.3%) knew that daily paracetamol intake is unnecessary. Additionally, 60.7% believed that paracetamol should only be used when needed, especially for pain. The findings also indicated that 73% of participants do not take paracetamol for long periods without understanding the cause of their pain. However, 13.5% admitted to taking it despite being unaware of the pain’s origin, assuming it might be psychological rather than physical. In such cases, using paracetamol is unnecessary and could cause adverse effects. Although paracetamol is an over-the-counter (OTC) medication, 76.6% of participants reported using it without medical consultation. It can lead to serious side effects, such as liver toxicity, especially if misused. However, 33% of respondents were unaware that paracetamol could cause such complications due to uncontrolled use.

Permeation Enhancers for Transdermal Drug Delivery: Strategies and Advancements Focusing Macromolecules

Abstract: The various transdermal drug delivery methods allow medications to cross the biological barriers and enter the bloodstream to elicit the desired pharmacological response. The relevant article focuses on the numerous biological and other macromolecule-based permeation enhancers, including carbohydrates, protein-peptides, and lipids, used in transdermal drug delivery. Although the focus of the study is on the role of macromolecules, as well as their mechanisms and modes of action for efficient transdermal drug delivery, it also concentrates on recent developments in various permeation enhancement techniques. Transdermal administration of weakly permeable medications with shorter biological half-lives typically utilises permeation augmentation techniques and agents, which should not have any explicit toxicological implications or incompatibility within the formulations. In this review, the limelight has been given to the promising permeation enhancers of the current scenario, which consist of various macromolecules.
