Abstract: Lantana camara L. (Family: Verbenaceae) is one of the world’s dangerous invasive alien species. This review paper aimed to review the ecological impacts, distribution, and management approaches of the invasive species of Lantana camara in Ethiopia. A comprehensive literature search was conducted across academic databases, including Google Scholar, Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed and Science Direct. Studies published between 2018 and 2024 were selected based on relevance and rigour, and their findings were synthesised into themes covering the ecological impacts, distribution, and management approaches of Lantana camara. The distribution of Lantana camara in Ethiopia is extensive, affecting many ecosystems, including cultivated and non-cultivated land, roadside areas, grazing areas, rural villages, riverbanks, wetlands, forests, and urban areas. They are introduced into a new country through either human or natural causes (such as winds, birds, animals, or water). Biodiversity loss, socioeconomic problems, agricultural losses, issues affecting human and animal well-being, and the invasion of national parks are the known impacts that Lantana camara poses in Ethiopia. Utilization of Lantana camara for several purposes, prevention of its further spreading into non-infected areas, use of fire, mechanical, chemical, biological control, and awareness creation are recommended to management policies that can bring solutions to the threats posed by the clear within the country. Then, the government of Ethiopia should frequently evaluate the distribution and socioeconomic impact of this species to take proper protection actions and to prevent further introduction and spread of the latana camara species in new areas that are not yet infested.

Awareness and Attitudes Toward Implantable Electrical Medical Technologies Among Syrian Medical Students: A Cross-Sectional Survey

Abstract: Background: Implantable electrical medical technologies (IEMTs) such as pacemakers, cochlear implants, deep brain stimulators, and insulin pumps are transforming modern healthcare by providing innovative diagnostic and therapeutic options. Their successful adoption in clinical settings depends not only on technical availability but also on the readiness, awareness, and attitudes of future healthcare professionals. In Syria, a country facing significant educational and infrastructural challenges, little is known about how medical students perceive and engage with these emerging technologies. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the awareness, attitudes, and perceived readiness of Syrian medical and health sciences students toward IEMTs, and to explore their primary sources of information, perceived benefits, and concerns. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional online survey was conducted in April 2025. A total of 506 undergraduate students and interns from medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, nursing, and biomedical engineering at both public and private universities across Syria participated in the study. The validated Arabic questionnaire comprised 27 items, covering demographic data, knowledge and exposure to IEMTs, attitudes toward their integration into education and clinical practice, and willingness to pursue specialisation in the field. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and visualised through tables and charts. Results: Approximately 66% of respondents reported prior awareness of IEMTs, with cardiac pacemakers and insulin pumps being the most familiar devices among them. Online platforms accounted for 42% of information sources, while only 12% of students had direct interaction with patients using such devices. More than 85% believed that IEMTs are beneficial for healthcare advancement, and 73% supported incorporating them into university curricula. Despite these positive attitudes, students highlighted significant concerns regarding long-term safety, affordability, limited local training facilities, and regulatory gaps. Over 60% expressed interest in pursuing further education or specialization in IEMTs. Conclusion: Syrian medical students demonstrate strong enthusiasm and favourable perceptions toward IEMTs, despite limited academic exposure and clinical experience. These findings underscore the urgent need for curriculum reform, enhanced practical training, and policy development to better prepare future healthcare professionals for integrating advanced medical technologies into clinical practice.

Anchote Research in Ethiopia and Achievements: A Comprehensive Review

Abstract: Anchote (Coccinia abyssinica L.) is a vital tuber crop that belongs to the family Cucurbitaceae and is cultivated mainly for food, as its most important energy source, and medicinal uses in the tropics. In Ethiopia, Anchote is grown in some areas of the western and southern regions, offering several advantages over other cereals as a food staple in areas with poor soil conditions, uncertain rainfall, and weak market infrastructure. Despite research on crop adaptability, selection, nutritional, and anti-nutritional factors, there is a lack of information on the overall status, challenges, and the future role of Anchote production in Ethiopia. This paper, therefore, aims to provide a brief overview of the genetic improvement, agronomic research, nutritional aspects, biochemical analysis, anti-nutritional factors, disease and insect pest management, and future research directions of Anchote in Ethiopia. Different research findings have been obtained and registered since the inception of research on Anchote in Ethiopia, including agronomic practices, technologies, biochemical analysis for nutritional composition, and anti-nutritional factors. The availability of these outputs in a compiled and comprehensive way is essential for enhancing the production and productivity of Anchote in Ethiopia and to influence the policy makers to consider Anchote underutilized crop not known by most of the country so as enabling to introduce scale up to be known as one of the prominent food and nutrition security crops in the country. Hence, the article can serve as a valuable reference resource for researchers, students, agricultural extension workers, and NGOs working in Ethiopia in the area of root and tuber crops, in general, and Anchote in particular.

A Questionnaire Study of Knowledge, Attitude, and Practices of Herbal Medications Among Syrians

Abstract: Access to medicines is an essential aspect of healthcare and vital to human well-being. It is necessary to understand people’s awareness of the importance of using medications to maintain their health. This study aimed to assess the level of understanding regarding the use of herbal medicines compared to synthetic medications in Syria through a distributed questionnaire. 66.5% of participants were female. 63.5% of the participants were aged between 18 and 25 years. In terms of education, 82% of participants had university degrees. Students comprise the largest professional group, representing 62% of participants. 54.5% live in the city, and 58.5% do not belong to the medical or health sector. The percentage of prior knowledge or direct experience with herbal medicine is low, indicating a lack of knowledge about alternative medicine in the community. Many participants also expressed their confidence in these medications, particularly for treating minor conditions such as colds and respiratory disorders. However, the results also do not reflect awareness of the potential risks of using alternative or opposing herbal medicines, including interactions with chemical medications. Participants used non-scientific sources of information, such as the internet or personal experiences, which is a real development of these medications to stimulate and enhance their effectiveness.

Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice of Self-Medication in Syria

Abstract: This study aimed to assess knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding self-medication among Syrians, with a focus on identifying factors and perceived risks associated with this behaviour. The online questionnaire was conducted between October 2023 and March 2024, yielding 103 valid responses. The questionnaire consisted of four sections: demographic information, self-medication behaviour, sources of information and motivation, and perception of risk. A vast majority (89.3%) of participants self-medicated, with 35% doing so more than five times in the past six months. The most used drugs were painkillers (86.4%), vitamins (31.1%), and herbal remedies (23.3%). Headaches, toothaches, allergies, and colds were the illnesses most frequently treated at home. Despite relatively high knowledge levels regarding side effects (79.6%) and prescription requirements (83.5%), over half of the participants (54.4%) chose to use antibiotics without consulting a medical professional. The primary sources of information were personal experiences (72.8%) and recommendations from pharmacists (47.6%). Although participants recognised risks, such as side effects (69.9%) and antibiotic resistance (37.9%), this knowledge did not consistently translate into safer practices. Self-medication is very common among Syrians, particularly among young, urban residents. There is a coexistence of reasonable awareness levels with ongoing unsafe practices due to behavioural and systemic factors. Interventions targeting educational programs and improving access to professional healthcare services are necessary to promote responsible self-medication and reduce potential harms.
